Threading vs waxing vs epilator: which is best for facial hair?

All three remove hair from the root, so all three last weeks rather than days. The difference is in how much they irritate, how well they handle short hair, and how likely you are to end up with ingrowns or dark marks. Here is the honest comparison, area by area.

Quick answer

Threading is the most precise and the safest for reactive skin. Waxing and sugaring are fastest over larger areas and last slightly longer. Facial epilators are cheapest long term but carry the highest ingrown risk on the face. All three should be spaced 3–4 weeks apart.

Threading

A twisted cotton thread rolls over the skin and lifts hairs out in a row. No heat, no chemicals, and nothing adheres to the skin surface — which is why it is often recommended for people using retinoids, or with rosacea or eczema. It is also the most precise option, so it is the default for brows and the upper lip.

Downsides: slow over larger areas, results depend heavily on the technician's skill, and it stings on the lip.

Waxing and sugaring

Wax or sugar paste grips the hairs and removes a whole section in one pull. Fast, effective on dense growth, and usually the longest-lasting of the three. Hard wax formulated for the face is gentler than strip wax because it adheres to hair more than skin. Sugaring is applied at body temperature and removed in the direction of growth, which lowers breakage.

Downsides: heat plus lifting is the combination most likely to leave post-inflammatory pigmentation on medium and deeper skin tones, and wax is a hard no over active acne, sunburn, or recent isotretinoin. If your skin is reactive, start with the sensitive-skin approach.

Facial epilators

A rotating head of tiny tweezers grabs and pulls hairs out mechanically. Cheap over time, usable at home, and effective on short hair. But because it plucks hair by hair at variable angles, it is the method most likely to snap hairs below the surface — and snapped hairs are how ingrowns begin. On the chin and jaw specifically, repeated epilating is a common cause of persistent bumps.

Which should you choose?

  • Reactive, rosacea-prone or on retinoids: threading.
  • Dense growth across cheeks or jaw: hard wax or sugaring.
  • Budget-conscious, tolerant skin, body areas too: epilator.
  • Fine peach fuzz only: none of the three — use dermaplaning.
  • A handful of coarse strays: occasional tweezing is fine; see what plucking really does.

The step that makes any of them work better

Root-level removal resets the growth cycle but does not change it — the same follicle produces the same hair again in three to four weeks. Applying a topical growth inhibitor between removals is what shifts regrowth finer over time. Mohammed's 2014 study found topical Cyperus rotundus oil reduced hair growth in idiopathic facial hirsutism, and a 2022 trial found it reduced the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that waxing and epilating can leave behind. Apply Cyperus rotundus oil 30–60 minutes after removal, then twice daily.

Frequently asked questions

Is threading better than waxing for the face?

For sensitive or reactive skin, yes — threading uses no heat or adhesive and lifts hair without stripping the skin surface. Waxing covers larger areas faster and typically lasts a week longer.

Do epilators cause ingrown hairs on the face?

They can. Epilators pull hair at inconsistent angles and snap some hairs below the surface, which is the main cause of ingrowns. Gentle exfoliation twice a week between sessions reduces the risk.

How long does hair need to be for threading or waxing?

Threading works from about 2 mm; waxing generally needs 4–5 mm so the wax has enough to grip. Too short means broken hairs and patchy results.

Does waxing the face cause dark marks?

It can, particularly on medium to deep skin tones. Heat and lifting create inflammation that triggers post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Daily SPF and avoiding repeat passes over the same area both help.

Which method makes hair grow back finer?

None of them on their own. The reliable way to make regrowth finer is a topical inhibitor used consistently between removals.

Can I thread or wax while using retinol?

Pause retinoids for three days before threading and five to seven days before waxing. Removing hair over retinoid-thinned skin risks lifting the skin surface itself.
